University Mental Health: Supporting everyday health

Parents and loved ones can play an important role in helping students succeed in college. And it doesn’t mean supporting an epic battle to help them enter the “right” school. We can encourage students to take a healthy attitude towards practicing mental health and self-care when they start college. We can reinforce their health is just as important as our resume.

A heartfelt message can be a game changer. Start by letting your students know that you care about their mental health. We often forget to say these simple but profound messages.

We are constantly growing and changing, and things are not set on stones. Let them remind us that not all of us are pre-programmed into mental wellness skills. Help them believe it is possible to learn a set of skills that will help them live a healthier life, support our work, and make them feel better about themselves.

Mental wellness skills vary from person to person. Inspire students to discover what mental wellness skills work for them. Let them know there is no right way to practice mental wellness skills.

You need to practice to get better at something, including healthier behaviours. I encourage students to take a long look at trying new wellness strategies, with the goal of trying something several times before deciding whether it will help. And if they conclude that this strategy is not appropriate, give them a thorough “attempt” and encourage them to try new strategies.

Enhances the general area of wellness. If time is right, ask how things are going around physical self-care, manage your thoughts and feelings, build relationships, manage your time, and what’s important to them Identity. When you ask about their wellness, they will realize that only their report cards are valued.

Excellent mental health care is made up of many small to middle school options all day, all day. There are no easy fixes. However, when we help valuable university students prioritize these choices and actions, our students are more likely to not only survive the university, but also thrive.
