Imagine sitting down to write an email relying on a large language model for several weeks for structured thinking. Words don’t flow that easily. The consistency you once had seems to be slower to realize. Or think of a driver who spent several months using Tesla’s Fully Autonomous Driving (FSD) mode. This is an AI vibration trap. Repeated shifts between AI assist and manual engagement can create unstable effects. Cognitionperformance, and even safety. We tend to think of technology as an additional force. Expand your abilities, make them better, smarter, faster. But in reality, augmentation creates inherent vulnerabilities. It conditions us to new ways of thinking, navigating and working. When we return to incompetent mode, we experience cognitive discontinuities rather than simply returning to our previous state.
In both cases, the problem is not just a loss of skill, but a friction that switches back and forth. The brain, conditioned for enhancement, resists shifting.
It is well established that we are our brains Adapts to efficiencyhowever, this adaptation can lead to two different outcomes. Skill erosion when AI is used strategically or when its dependence on AI is not checked. When new tools become part of your workflow, you outsource certain cognitive loads. Memory (Search engine), decision making (clinical AI), or situational awareness (autonomous driving). This outsourcing is beneficial. Until you have to take control again.
This issue is inherent to the present technical moment. This is common throughout trials, successes and failures. We are in a transitional phase where AI and automation are powerful, yet still ubiquitous and not seamless, vibrating people between high-tech engagement and traditional manual experiences. If the enhancement is fully stable and widespread, will the vibration disappear or will it remain a continuous challenge? Some people adapt and become stable, while others struggle and decline depending on their ability to effectively manage AI trust.
Future generations will not experience this friction if they no longer need to go back to manual skills, but should they always need a fallback mode to preserve the core competencies at the moment when automation fails, or should they enjoy a more human approach? Alternatively, the solution lies in a new cognitive model. This involves humans and AI in a more fluid and symbiotic way, minimizing vibrational disruption, and more adaptive and promoted; Resilience Intelligence.
AI vibration traps are not just an inconvenience, but a fundamental difference in how individuals adapt to AI assist systems. Some people may see skill erosion due to excessive dependence, while others experience improvement through strategic involvement. This challenge forms a way of designing, using and adjusting AI to ensure that it enhances human capabilities rather than decreasing them. If we recognize this effect, we can begin developing strategies to minimize the risk of rethinking training protocols, hybrid workflows, or how to integrate automation into human decision-making.
