And while your family may be technically on vacation, your mental load never puts the clock on. Logistics may look different in the summer, but do you do mental juggling? It stays and is often strengthened.
There is a cultural idea that summer is time to recharge. Lazy days, frozen drinks, a joy in the golden age. But for many high-profile women, it’s not a holiday. That’s Rebranding Just like we carry it all year round.
You are still someone who remembers everything. Plan everything. Keep everyone else’s experience in your brain like a huge checklist. And it’s tired.
You are conditioned to be competent, responsible and efficient. If you’re someone who can “handle it,” it’s hard to imagine stepping in. And when you praise the world for doing it all, it feels like you’re going to drop the ball. You tell yourself Should Enjoy this. you Should feel thank you. But it’s hard to feel that it exists when your brain is doing all the consequences like a travel agent/security/therapist.
So, how do you actually lighten the load?
Wanting a break is not selfish. It’s not unreasonable to feel tired. The mental load does not magically disappear with the school bell. In fact, it often gets heavy as you are at the heart of all your planning and entertainment.
Give permission to need space this summer, seek help, and release the idea that joy means managing others.
